In 1888 Sherlock Holmes is lamenting the lack of a criminal case to challenge his intellectual powers when one materializes--heralded by the shriek of headlines and the splatter of gore. In the vice-ridden East London district of Whitechapel, three women have been murdered, their bodies hideously defiled.
